How It Works
Start with base floor area from room dimensions or direct square footage. The calculator adds a waste allowance and then divides by coverage per box to estimate how many boxes you need.
Coverage can come directly from product packaging or be calculated from tile or plank size and pieces per box.
Base area = Length x Width (or entered total sq ft)
Required area = Base area x (1 + Waste% / 100)
Coverage per box = (Length in x Width in / 144) x Pieces per box

- All floor dimensions are measured in feet; piece dimensions are in inches.
- Material is rounded up to whole boxes because partial boxes are typically not sold.
- Waste assumptions vary by layout complexity, pattern, and installer preference.
- This estimate excludes trim, underlayment, adhesive, and labor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is waste percentage important for flooring?
Most installs require cuts at walls, corners, and transitions. Waste also covers damaged pieces and pattern matching, so using a buffer avoids running short.
What waste percentage should I use?
10% is a common baseline for straight layouts. Use a higher value for diagonal patterns, complex rooms, or when material availability is limited.
Should I use box coverage or tile size mode?
Use box coverage if the package already lists square feet per box. Use tile/plank size mode when you only know piece dimensions and pieces per box.
Does this include underlayment, trim, or installation labor?
No. This estimator covers flooring material quantity and box cost only. Add underlayment, trim, adhesive, and labor separately.
