Estimated time
2 min
Estimate roofing material from roof footprint or total area, then adjust for pitch and waste.
1) Roof area input
Use dimensions for a quick estimate or total area when you already have plan measurements.
2) Pitch guidance
Roof pitch is rise/run. For example, 6/12 means 6 inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run.
Common pitch presets
Pitch factor: 1.118
6/12 is a moderate slope. A 10% to 12% waste buffer is common for many cut-up roof layouts.
3) Material assumptions
Start with base horizontal roof area from length and width (or from an existing area takeoff). The calculator then applies a pitch multiplier to estimate true sloped surface area.
Waste percentage is added after pitch adjustment, and final area is converted to both bundles and roofing squares.
Base area = Length x Width (or entered total area)
Pitch factor = sqrt(Rise^2 + Run^2) / Run
Adjusted area = (Base area x Pitch factor) x (1 + Waste% / 100)
Bundles = ceil(Adjusted area / Coverage), Squares = ceil(Adjusted area / 100), Cost = Bundles x Price

40 x 30 ft footprint, 5/12 pitch, 10% waste, 33.3 sq ft per bundle, $39 per bundle
1,382.6 sq ft adjusted area, 42 bundles, $1,638 estimated material cost
Even moderate pitch adds measurable surface area compared with flat plan dimensions.
52 x 28 ft footprint, 8/12 pitch, 12% waste, 33.3 sq ft per bundle, $42 per bundle
1,959.5 sq ft adjusted area, 59 bundles, $2,478 estimated material cost
Steeper pitch and a higher waste factor can significantly increase bundle count.
2,250 sq ft measured plan area, 6/12 pitch, 8% waste, 32.0 sq ft per bundle, $37 per bundle
2,719.3 sq ft adjusted area, 85 bundles, $3,145 estimated material cost
Total-area mode is useful when you already have a roof plan takeoff from drawings.
Pitch increases true roof surface area compared with flat plan dimensions. The calculator applies a slope factor from rise and run to estimate that added area.
Many asphalt shingle projects use 8% to 15% waste. Simpler layouts are often near the low end, while steep or complex roofs usually need more.
One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Many supplier quotes are organized by squares even if material is purchased in bundles.
No. This estimator focuses on field shingle quantity and bundle cost only. Add accessory materials and labor as separate line items.
